the end...

In my coursework, suggest the girl is sitting on the debris which cause by the earthquake. The waves in front represent the natural forces which could easily destroy people’s property and cause loss of human lives. The girl is been trapped by the chains, which caused the girl to remain in sorrow and sadness. As the girl’s facial features could not be seen, it says that the girl is very lost. The butterfly wings behind her symbolizes her will of breaking free from the chains, but the broken wing (due to the suffering) does not allow her to do so. As she is alone in the drawing, and she is hugging herself, it shows that she is lonely and lack of security. The little green plants hiding near her in the debris suggest that hope is actually around her, but she must first have the courage to look up in order to discover the hope.

The top part of the drawing depicts the heavenly-like place. This represents a place where many people, who lived in the suffering, would like to go to. The butterfly, which symbolizes the hope, suggests that the hope could change the life of the girl.

  1. This work is very meaningful and inspirational. The theme of hope is very well brought out by the butterfly that seems to approach the girl and bridge the gap between the girl and the desired 'heaven'. Particularly like how the black and white foreground contrasts with the colorful and 'happy' background. The waves and the human figure is realistically rendered. Perhaps instead portraying nature at it's best, other indications of happiness could also be used to suggest 'heaven' (children playing, animals, etc.) cos the background seems quite empty.

Good work illustrating the theme and effectively bringing out the theme of hope through the work. 辛苦le :D

  2. I really like the contrast between the colour in the painting. I feel that you made really good use of the different colours to convey your message of your artwork.

The top of the work is really colourful and vibrant. It really gave a sense of hope and happiness!!! I particularly like the orange and yellow colour of the sun, it seems to be very energetic.

I like your theme too and it is really applicable to the students in Nanyang! We should all learn to be more positive and never give up hope.

    GOOD JOB:))

  3. Hi Shiyun! You really utilised the pastel's vibrancy and ability to be merged and blended together to the fullest!/ The top portions are, naturally, the most attention grabbing part of your composition. You really did portray a 'Heaven on Earth' kind of feeling there.

The bottom is a start contrast. But I think you could have upped the contrast a bit more because when I see it, I think the bottom seems subdued by the top. It loses out in terms of color, which is meant to. But maybe if you've added a bit more contrast in terms of the black and white tones at the bottom, as well as more linework, then it would have made for a more powerful composition. The technique seems a bit restained too - with charcoal, you can afford to be more ambitious and adventurous! Like drawing bigger waves, fatter droplets of water, and make the wings more rugged.

On the otherhand, your progress had been slow and tedious because you paid attention to the linework and toning in places where others would have neglected. So good work :D
